Below are some of the benefits that education researchers and practitioners have associated with community engaged teaching. What does community engaged teaching look like in practice?
There are many variations and each have their usefulness for different applications. According to Kerissa Heffernan, there are six general models. In this model, students are expected to have a presence in the community throughout the semester and reflect on their experiences regularly.
In these reflections, they use course content as a basis for their analysis and understanding of the key theoretical, methodological and applied issues at hand. This model presumes that the students have or will develop capacities with which to help communities solve a problem.
These courses are generally designed for majors and minors in a given discipline and are offered almost exclusively to students in their final year.
Capstone courses ask students to draw upon the knowledge they have obtained throughout their course work and combine it with relevant service work in the community. This approach asks students to work as many as 10 to 20 hours a week in a community setting.
As in traditional internships, students are charged with producing a body of work that is of value to the community or site. However, unlike traditional internships, service internships have on-going faculty-guided reflection to challenge the students to analyze their new experiences using discipline-based theories. Service internships focus on reciprocity: Community-based action research is similar to an independent study option for the student who is highly experienced in community work.
This approach can be effective with small classes or groups of students. In this model, students work closely with faculty members to learn research methodology while serving as advocates for communities.
My initial thought was that it was other stuff that I could be doing instead of giving up twenty hours of my time for community service. In my previous experiences with YMCAs, I thought that this community service would be kind of boring like it was in the past.
The YMCAs that I volunteered at back home were strictly dealing with adults or just cleaning up the facility. When they told me this, I thought that this community service would be a no nonsense type of situation. This just made my opinion about the situation worse. A week after the background checks were done, we had our first meeting with our site director, Mr. From the first time we met him, he was a very energetic and passionate about his role within the YMCA.
He began by giving us a tour of the facility and going over some of the tasks that we were to complete over the course of the project. Our beginning tasks were just to make sure the building stayed clean and to assist the staff with anything that needed to be completed.
We were also informed of the events that were coming up that we had an opportunity to assist with. After the first meeting with George, my attitude about the service learning project changed. I knew that this would not be anything like my past experiences working with YMCAs and I was looking forward to serving there.
It came time for us to actually start working and making a difference within the YMCA. We could pick between going out to the community and passing out flyers or we could help set some of the props and decorations for the event.
I chose to pass out flyers to the community. I felt like by doing this, I got to meet with community face to face and establish a friendship connection with them. Because of the connection that was made by the individuals including myself that passed out flyers, the turn-out at the fair was amazing.
The staff commended us on our efforts because more people showed up than they originally planned. Not only did we assist with various events that were held at the YMCA, we also had the opportunity to tutor some of the kids in the community. Since a lot of the kids were struggling with some of their school assignments, we took a couple days to tutor them. Some of the subjects that they were having problems with included math, science, history, and English. Even though my team and I were all business majors, there were still certain subjects that we were pretty strong in.
To be more effective, we split the students up into four groups so that we could cover each of the subjects. The group that I chose needed help in math. The problem with most of the kids was not that they were incapable of learning the material. A method that I used with them, that was taught to me a apply math to making money. After I explained to how excelling in math would ultimately help them make more money, they were more enthused about the subject area. I personally never saw myself as a tutor but after helping the kids, it made me see certain qualities in myself that I did not know I had.
Among other things, my team and I had the privilege of sitting down and talking with some of the senior citizens in the community. Besides helping the kids with their school work, this was one of the most beneficial things about my community service at the YMCA.
In my conversation with some of the senior citizens, it allowed me to really appreciate the viewpoint of the elderly and in return sharing my insight on a few things.
It made me feel good because they recognized us for doing something positive in the community and making a difference instead of getting into to trouble. Now that my time at the service learning site is over, I am glad that I had the opportunity to participate in it.
It helped further myself in becoming a future leader. During the class we discussed a couple of frameworks to help is grow and become great leaders. Every time we stepped into the building we had to be professionals and make sure that our character was never in question.
Cultural inclusion came into play because we had to be aware that were serving people from different age groups and backgrounds. So in order to get the best results our message had to be plain and simple to everybody. This It also helped realize that I cannot prejudge a situation based on past experiences because not every situation is going to be the same.
I walked into the service learning project not knowing how it would impact my life. I walked out with a greater respect of people of all ages because they all have something the offer.
This was an overall great experience and it is something I plan on continuing after this class is over. Self-protection is really important for individuals living in a society because it enables us to safeguard ourselves from any harm. An individual should always be prepared to face all the situations and should learn to stay safe while making their contribution to the society.
Therefore, I have decided to educate my community about the need and importance of self protection.
